Ramie, a natural fiber derived from the stalks of the Boehmeria nivea plant, has been valued for thousands of years for its strength, luster, and durability. Cultivated in China for centuries, where it’s known as zhù má 苎麻, ancient farmers used ramie to craft fine textiles called Summer clothing xià bù 夏布, lightweight and breathable. Its legacy extends to Egypt, where it may have been woven into cloth for wrapping mummies, showcasing its resistance to bacteria and mildew.
